More than mere human logic could also be that while Mary is seated at Jesus’ right (as the Queen in gold of Ophir), Joseph could be at his left. Jesus may have hidden this from the apostles to be sure of their openness to leave their kin behind according to God’s will in religious life (not entirely behind, for even Mary and Jesus remained together in ways in Jesus’ last 3 years… though Joseph was taken to Heaven or sheol, Hebrew for the waiting place).
Honoring those whom God honors and glorifies is surely of His will for Triumphant Church family love. Saints honored God with their lives and ever will, glorifying our Father and now perfect with Him “as He is perfect.” Nothing impure or wrong (per purgatory, if need be) can dwell in Heaven. Experts like Pope Leo 13th have taught how Mary and Joseph are the only two above the holy angels. After God, the angels love to obey and serve Mary and Joseph.
In honor of them both, as St. Bernard already had a Memorare to Mary and St. Andres Bessette one to Joseph, we have our own to Joseph as ‘O Quam Sapes’ [below] with a finale for our Mystical Rose through him and the Holy Spirit. It’s in plural form for prayer with other Mystical Rose devotees at least in spirit. A flowery title of Jesus in it excludes anything effeminate: Jesus as the Rose of Golgotha. Joseph is also named in our Emmanuel Chaplet as the ‘Branch of the Lily’ (already imprimatured by an Archbishop in Central America). In that Chaplet Mary & Joseph come together for Jesus as Lily of the Valley and Rose of Golgotha. Nearer to the Year of the Consecrated Life, we recall how the lily goes with Jesus, Joseph, St. Anthony of Padua (oft portrayed with a lily due to his virtue): with virginal holy men and women. Some mystics learned that Joseph’s branch blossomed, to prove (among other possible suitors for Mary) that he was the one God willed as husband for Mary. Gabriel re-confirmed it after Joseph found Mary pregnant with God then as Godman.
Now, for private use:
[(Memorare =) Remember thou… here is O QUAM SAPES =] “O how you know, O most chaste spouse of the Virgin Mary that never was it known that anyone who asked for thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy benefaction was left unaided. Full of confidence in thy fidelity [(or) forthrightness (or) fortitude)], we hasten to thee to have thy hallowed blessing. Hearken O St. Joseph, priestly father for the redeemer to our humble prayer and through all the ages, yes, and in thy goodness hear and answer us.” Joseph is also a kind of ‘priestly father’ via the ‘common priesthood’ (not ‘ministerial’) which all partake of per baptism (via the oil of chrism, etc.) in Christ the High Priest (of priests), Prophet (of prophets), and King (of kings). Priestliness, as Mystical Rose highlighted, goes much with Sacrifice (spiritual, and mainly the Mass), and Joseph had much of such priestliness. How? He knew that Jesus would be our sacrificial offering on the Cross, that he’d have to sacrifice being there… Bl. Emmerick learned that Joseph would not have been able to endure witnessing the Passion… and so he’d have to die first. Closing the O Quam Sapes: “Holy Spirit and Joseph for love of Our Lady we beg you to found the Mystical Rose Membership Society, while we are yet here by the will of Our Heavenly Father and if it please the ‘Rose of Golgotha’ - Amen.”
The Litany to St. Joseph is good to pray and chant or to listen to chanted (as by the Sisters on Youtube). Indeed, as Joseph’s Month is in March, we may march with him through Lent to Holy Week and beyond. Perfect for Lent: as in his litany Joseph is the “Terror of demons, Protector of the Holy Church, Foster-father of the Son of God, most prudent, most courageous [fortitude], most faithful, etc… Lover of poverty” as is the spirit of Pope Francis, too.
Have a great Month of Joseph as we march on through Lent, springtime, Holy Week, etc. toward the Year of Consecrated Life for 2015,
Fr. Ed, Mexico, SOLT, but MRMS too in spirit!
Have a Blessed & Holy March month of Holy Joseph.
May Our Lady ever-flowering & overflowing with graces & blessings unfold in us The 3-Fold indwelling Divinity (of Her 3 'Roses') to ever spring, sing, & ring alive.
Amatissima semper esto Maria Rosa Mystica!
Most Beloved ever be Maria Rosa Mystica!
